To download a driver directly from the manufacturer, navigate to the product page for the device in question. Most websites will have a Support or Downloads page from which to grab the appropriate driver. For example, here’s the download page for Logitech’s HD Pro Webcam C920. Download the installer, and install it like you would any other program.

This involves uninstalling the drivers provided by your PC manufacturer before installing the drivers provided here. Adobe strongly recommends that you back up your system first. You can find Intel’s instructions on installing the drivers manually here. Restart your computer, even if you’re not prompted to do so. Windows doesn’t always force you to restart after updating a driver but it’s a good idea.

You’ll also stumble upon a few more programs that offer you scanning for driver changes, and automatically installing updates. Besides the fact that it’s compatible with all versions of popular OEM device manufacturers such as AMD, ASUS, Creative, Intel, HP, Lenovo, NVIDIA, or Razer, Driver Fusion makes updating drivers simple. To check for driver updates for any component, just right-click on it, and choose to Update driver software. So, if you’re rocking a newer NVidia or ATI graphics card, all you need to do to keep your drivers up to date is to regularly check for Windows updates. There are a couple of ways to check for drivers update, and each method is quite simple.

The best course of action is to install the network driver and download them from the manufacturer’s web site. Alternatively, put them on a USB key and install them.

Finally, I check the hardware component manufacturer’s web sites. Even though a component may be supported by Windows Update or the computer manufacturer’s site, there’s typically a delay before the updates make it to those locations. The component manufacturer, as you can imagine, is the first place that a driver update will typically be made available.

While most drivers focus on improving Realtek drivers for Windows stability and performance, graphics drivers see more regular updates, with drivers often being tailored for specific games. Depending on your graphics card, there will be different ways to update its drivers.

Since drivers are supplied and supported by hundreds, if not thousands, of hardware vendors, the places to look and the techniques to update are similarly varied. Unfortunately, driver problems resulting from an upgrade are not unheard of, and the symptoms aren’t always as dramatic as the blue screen of death.
